You know what caught me off guard about Stare Kino Cinema Residence? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re standing in the lobby – this used to be a proper cinema, and they’ve kept just enough of that vintage movie theater charm to make you feel like you’re part of Łódź’s film history. I mean, this is the city where Polanski and Wajda got their start, so there’s something kind of cool about sleeping where people once watched movies.

The location on Piotrkowska is honestly brilliant if you want to experience real Łódź. You’re right in the thick of the longest pedestrian street in Europe (locals love telling you that), but at number 120, you’re far enough from the main party zone around the market square that you’ll actually sleep at night. I walked everywhere from here – the Manufaktura shopping center is maybe fifteen minutes if you cut through the side streets, and you’re basically surrounded by those amazing murals that pop up on random building walls throughout Śródmieście. The tram stops are close enough that you don’t need to think about parking (which, honestly, can be a nightmare in this part of the city anyway).

What really won me over was how they’ve handled the whole cinema conversion thing. The rooms feel surprisingly spacious – I’m guessing they knocked down walls between what used to be office spaces or something – and there’s this nice mix of modern fixtures with subtle nods to the building’s past. The beds are actually comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss that can be in converted buildings), and the bathrooms are properly renovated, not just slapped together. The staff genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood too, which made a difference when I was trying to figure out where to grab dinner that wasn’t just pierogi for tourists. They pointed me toward this little place on Jaracza that I never would have found otherwise. Sure, it’s a 3-star place so don’t expect a spa or room service, but everything works the way it should, the WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and the whole place just feels… authentic, I suppose. That 8.9 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be something it isn’t, but what it does, it does really well.

  The athmosphere of the whole place, with reference to different national and international movies. Every floor has a different interior design, inspired to different themes concerning the history of cinema. There is a cinema at the cantine floor, but I'm afraid the movies are in Polish (and anyway, being there fore business I would not have had the time to watch them)

  Very central location, just off Piotrkowska street. Walking distance to all the main attractions and Fabryczna train station. Friendly staff and fantastic breakfast.
